Health and Safety policy
Edgware Removals Health and Safety Policy
Edgware Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, storage handling and related services within our operating area.
Our objectives are to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, comply with relevant health and safety legislation, continually improve our health and safety performance, and promote a culture in which safety is an integral part of every task we undertake.
Responsibilities and Management Commitment
The management of Edgware Removals accepts overall responsibility for health and safety and will ensure that adequate resources are made available to implement and maintain this policy. Management will regularly review working practices, equipment and training requirements, and will revise this policy when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance or the nature of our operations.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day health and safety on removal jobs, including briefing crews, checking equipment, monitoring safe working practices and taking immediate action where unsafe conditions or behaviours are identified. All employees share responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others and are expected to follow instructions, use equipment correctly and report hazards without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting work on any removal or associated service, Edgware Removals will assess the risks to employees, customers and others who may be affected. This includes consideration of access routes, stairways, parking arrangements, lifting requirements, weather conditions and any specific customer needs or constraints.
Where significant risks are identified, appropriate control measures will be put in place. These may include the use of additional staff, specialist moving equipment, protective coverings, traffic management, or changes to the planned sequence of work. Our safe systems of work are designed to minimise manual handling, avoid damage to property and reduce the likelihood of accidents and near misses.
Training, Competence and Supervision
All employees engaged in removal activities will receive suitable and sufficient training relevant to their role. This includes instruction in manual handling techniques, the safe use of trolleys, dollies and other moving aids, loading and unloading vehicles, working on or near roads, and the correct use of personal protective equipment.
New employees and less experienced staff will work under appropriate supervision until they are assessed as competent. Ongoing refresher training will be provided to ensure that skills remain up to date and to incorporate any new methods or equipment introduced by Edgware Removals.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core element of our work and is managed carefully to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Staff are trained to assess the weight and shape of items before lifting, to use team lifting where appropriate, and to make use of suitable handling aids. No employee is required to lift or carry any load they believe to be unsafe.
All equipment used for removal activities, including vehicles, lifting aids, ramps, straps and protective materials, will be maintained in good working order. Regular checks are carried out, and any defective or damaged equipment will be removed from service immediately until it is repaired or replaced.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are integral to our operations and are maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and relevant road safety requirements. Drivers employed by Edgware Removals are expected to hold the appropriate licences, follow safe driving practices and comply with speed limits and parking restrictions.
Loads are secured to prevent shifting during transport, and vehicles are loaded in a way that maintains stability and allows safe unloading at the destination. Drivers are instructed to report any vehicle defects or incidents at the earliest opportunity so that corrective actions can be taken.
Protection of Customers, Public and Property
During removal work, every effort is made to protect customers, visitors and members of the public from risk. Where necessary, we will cordon off work areas, manage vehicle movements carefully and adopt traffic and pedestrian controls to reduce the likelihood of accidents.
We take care to protect property at collection and delivery addresses, including the use of floor and wall protection where appropriate, safe stacking of items and careful route planning through buildings. Any damage, near misses or safety concerns raised by customers or staff are recorded and investigated to prevent recurrence.
Housekeeping, Cleanliness and Welfare
Work areas, vehicles and storage spaces are kept as tidy and orderly as reasonably practicable to reduce tripping hazards and other risks. Equipment and materials will be stored safely when not in use, and waste packaging or debris arising from our activities will be removed or disposed of responsibly.
Employees are provided with suitable welfare arrangements for the nature and duration of their work, including access to rest breaks, drinking water and sanitary facilities where reasonably available at customer premises or along the route.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses that occur during our activities must be reported to management promptly. These events will be recorded, investigated and reviewed so that underlying causes can be identified and corrective actions implemented.
Emergency procedures will be communicated to staff, including action to be taken in the event of fire, serious injury, vehicle collisions or dangerous occurrences. Where appropriate, first aid provisions will be available, and staff will be informed of the location of first aid supplies and any trained first aid personnel.
Consultation, Communication and Continuous Improvement
Edgware Removals encourages open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in reviews of working methods. We recognise that those carrying out removal tasks are often best placed to identify practical ways to improve safety and efficiency.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains suitable, adequate and effective. Any updates or changes will be communicated to staff and incorporated into our training and working procedures, supporting our commitment to continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
